Shapeshifter: The Legacy of Farhad Humayun—Part III

In this, the last part of The Aleph Review’s coverage of the exhibit displaying the works of 12 artists who have come together to create prints for a limited-edition box set (a project envisaged and curated by the late singer Farhad Humayun’s sister, Rima Bokhari, the director of the Farhad Humayun Foundation), we bring you the interpretive work of the following artists, drawing inspiration from the songs of a behemoth of the music industry.

Part III: Laila Rahman | Imran Qureshi | Anwar Saeed | Salima Hashmi


Laila Rahman is an artist based in Lahore who works in the disciplines of painting and printmaking. Having studied Advanced Painting at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art & Design, London, Laila received her Master’s in Printmaking with Distinction, from the Slade School of Fine Art, London. Rahman’s work has been exhibited internationally and is featured in many prestigious collections, chiefly at the Permanent Collection of the House of Commons, London; the Victoria & Albert Museum, London and the UCL Museum, London. Presently, she heads the Printmaking & Digital Media department at the prestigious National College of Arts, Lahore. Bolo Na

Imran Qureshi is a multi-award-winning artist and recipient of one of Pakistan’s highest civil awards: the Sitara-e-Imtiaz. With an illustrious career spanning over thirty years, Imran’s work has been showcased at more than 130 Exhibitions and Biennales internationally, even as his work is present in major institutions and public collections all over the globe, notably The Guggenheim, Abu Dhabi, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. He currently heads the Fine Art, Miniature Department at his alma mater, the National College of Arts, Lahore. Sah Vich

Anwar Saeed graduated from the National College of Arts, Lahore, in 1978 and went on to complete his post-graduate studies at the Royal College of Arts, London. Saeed’s long illustrious career spanning over five decades has seen him exhibit at innumerable international exhibitions and biennales all over the world, including Pakistan, USA, Norway and India. The artist lives and works in Lahore. Main Hoon

Salima Hashmi  is a distinguished artist, curator, staunch human rights activist and a contemporary art historian of repute whose works have been exhibited in Pakistan and at international exhibitions. Currently the Director of the UNESCO Madanjeet Singh Institute of South Asian Arts, Salima has curated exhibitions of contemporary art and traditional textiles, worked as Principal, National College of Arts and as Dean at the Mariam Dawood School of Visual Arts, Beaconhouse National University, Lahore. Amongst the many accolades she has received, Salima has been awarded the President's Medal for Pride of Performance for Art Education by the Government of Pakistan (1999), and an Honorary Doctorate by Bath Spa University, UK. She was also awarded the Sughra Rababi Lifetime Achievement Award for the Arts in 2023 and in the same year the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Lahore Literary Festival. Ho Jaane Do

The Alif exhibit runs November 6 - December 30, 2024, open to the public daily, 1-6pm (except Sundays) at Riot Studios, Lahore.
