Ume Laila

2020 was a year of terror and fear. Human beings seemed defenceless confronting the deadly Covid-19 virus, which is still not under control and is leaving great suffering and death in its wake. This video, ‘Mukalma’, reflects the uncertainty brought about by the current pandemic situation and its constant effect on daily life. The video consists of a conversation between two females questioning the mortality of life. The use of real news footage is visually mapping the moment and all the confusion, anxiety and panic.

Lahore-based artist Ume Laila graduated from the University of the Punjab's College of Art and Design in 2016. She is currently pursuing her master’s degree at the National College of Arts, Lahore. Laila is a multidisciplinary artist and explores subjects, such as relationships in contact with social life.

She has participated in Lahore-based art residencies, was part of the Imago Mundi project, besides taking part in group shows at Ejaz Art Gallery, Taseer Art Gallery and Como Museum in Lahore and at the World Bank, Islamabad. She has also participated in two collateral shows at the Lahore Biennale in 2020.
